2012-2013 International Flight Statistics

The number of people taking business trips out of the UK has fallen by more than 10% between early 2012 and early 2013. Despite this, business travellers heading into the UK from other parts of the world have increased in number by 7%.

On their own, these figures look like a dramatic change to the number of people doing business abroad. In reality, taking a full year into account, there has only been a 1% difference in the number of people travelling for business.

Statistics are showing that fewer people have this year travelled for business over the winter months, between January and March. This could, in part, be due to the Easter Holidays affecting working dates in March more than they usually do.

The Office of National Statistics found that, over three months in early 2013, 1.51 million people made business trips out of the country. 1.82 million people travelled in to the UK for business purposes.

Taking the full year into account, the UK has 6.78 million business travellers leaving from its airports each year. These statistics include those flying with first class and business class tickets to the US, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Australia and other international destinations, as well as travellers that are flying for business but aren’t in first class or business class seats.

A far higher number of travellers leave the UK in search of better weather, for a holiday or leisure trip. Statistics indicated that whilst 6.78 million people travel for business, there are more than 36.1 million leisure travellers that fly from the UK annually.

Total figures show that 56.4 million people travelled by air from the UK over the last twelve months. This figure includes business travellers, leisure travellers and those that are statistically not classified.
