Warm and mild throughout the year, San Francisco is a year-round mild holiday destination. Temperatures don’t fluctuate significantly, and so whilst you’re unlikely to feel at your most comfortable sunbathing by the pool, you’ll also find that a winter visit shouldn’t leave you shivering. San Francisco has many attractions to visit and enjoy, both indoors and outdoors from the iconic cable car system to Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s not unusual for cool breezes and fog to be experienced across San Fran, but it is worth noting that levels of rainfall can vary from one part of the city to the next.
Between December and March, rainfall levels on average are at their highest. December and January both have average rainfall levels of a little more than 110mm, whilst February and March are slightly drier but still significantly wetter than the rest of the year. These are also some of the coldest months in San Francisco, though still just a few °C colder than the warmest due to San Francisco’s stable temperatures. Averages are 10°C-11°C, with average highs and lows of 16°C and 7°C.
April, May and June are moderate to dry months. June sees just 3mm of rainfall on average, whilst levels are slightly higher in April and May at 38mm and 18mm. Temperatures through these months average between 11°C and 13°C, with 19°C and 10°C being the average highs and lows. Much of the rain during this season is confined to the hills, though lower altitudes can have a covering of fog and typical lighter showers. As a result, you’ll easily find time to enjoy San Francisco’s outdoor attractions including the Yerba Buena Gardens and Dolores Park.
It’s very rare to see any rain at all through July and August, when temperatures are also at their highest averaging 15°C-16°C in Downtown San Francisco, with average highs of 20°C and average lows of 12°C. These are dry months perfect for picnics at Crissy Field, waterfront dining in Ghirardelli Square or walks through the charming Fisherman’s Wharf neighbourhood, with no need to make an alternative rainy day plan.
Rainfall levels steadily increase from an average of 8mm in September to 25mm in October, and up to 64mm in November. These are some of the warmest months of the year, averaging around 14°C with average lows and highs of 10°C and 20°C. The relatively low rainfall levels in the autumn or fall months will provide you with the option to enjoy the many outdoor things to do, as well as visiting indoor attractions. Whether you visit San Francisco Zoo or The Walt Disney Family Museum, the weather won’t affect your plans for long if at all.
